Information & Tips
ENERGY STAR certified refrigerators and freezers allow you to maximize your energy savings without sacrificing great features. Both offer capabilities such as high-efficiency compressors that create less heat and use less energy, improved insulation that keeps food colder, and temperature and defrost features that help them operate more efficiently. When you’re thinking about what kind of refrigerator to buy, make sure you purchase the right size for your needs. Most energy-efficient models are typically 16–20 cubic feet, but keep in mind that the larger a fridge is, the more energy it uses. You should also generally look for models with fewer doors, to reduce air leakage and maximize your energy savings. (Source: ENERGY STAR)
When you’re looking at freezers, think about whether an upright or chest freezer is better for you. An upright freezer has a door like a refrigerator and shelves that offer easy organization. A chest freezer requires more floor space but is usually more energy efficient since the door opens from the top to limit cold air loss. Also, consider manual defrost freezers, which use half the energy of automatic ones, but need to be periodically defrosted for maximum energy savings. (Source: ENERGY STAR)
ENERGY STAR is the government-backed symbol for energy efficiency, providing credible, unbiased information that you can rely on to make well-informed decisions. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ensures that each product that earns the ENERGY STAR label is independently certified to deliver efficiency, performance, and savings.
