Both offer capabilities such as high-efficiency compressors that create less heat and use less energy, improved insulation that keeps food colder, and temperature and defrost features that help them operate more efficiently. When you’re thinking about what kind of refrigerator to buy, make sure you purchase the right size for your needs. Most energy-efficient models are typically 16–20 cubic feet, but keep in mind that the larger a fridge is, the more energy it uses. When you’re looking at freezers, think about whether an upright or chest freezer is better for you. An upright freezer has a door like a refrigerator and shelves that offer easy organization. A chest freezer requires more floor space but is usually more energy efficient since the door opens from the top to limit cold air loss.
